1 in 6 people in the U.S. are at risk for going hungry or being food insecure.
Many of our clients are the “working poor,” while others are seniors on fixed incomes, the disabled, teen mothers, the unemployed, and people facing temporary financial crisis who need help putting food on the table until they can get back on their feet. Good Cheer clients are in line with the roughly 62% of people using food banks in western Washington who hold a job or count on Social Security or unemployment insurance as their main income.
Good Cheer Food Bank receives a portion of its food from area food distribution agencies such as Food Lifeline and Northwest Harvest.
What Hunger Looks Like in Western Washington

Hunger can affect anyone.
- More than 45% of the individuals using a food bank, meal program or shelter in Western Washington have some form of post-secondary education. Only 9% are actually homeless.
- 35% of the people Food Lifeline serves are children.
- 14% of the people Food Lifeline serves are seniors.
- Hunger causes many families to make difficult choices.
- 47% of the people Food Lifeline serves had to choose between food and paying for heat or utilities.
- 29% of the people Food Lifeline serves had to choose between food and paying for medicine or medical care.
- 42% of the people Food Lifeline serves had to choose between paying for food and paying for rent or mortgage.
